Boston is a town in the north eastern part of the USA, the State of Massachusetts, close to the Atlantic Ocean. It was the centre of attraction of Lithuanian emigrants for more than a hundred years. The Master’s thesis, Cultural Life of Boston Lithuanians in 1950-1970, deals with the most significant fields of the Boston Lithuanians’ cultural life of the referred period. It also introduces the activity of individual personalities - Juozas Kapočius, Vladas Kulbokas, Stasys Santvaras. The chronological boundaries of the study are more symbolical. According to various data, in 1944, at the end of the Second World War, 60-70 thousand people fled from Lithuania to the West. Most of them were representatives of intelligentsia. After the war the largest number of those who withdrew stayed in DP camps in Germany. When the hopes of significant change in the world politics and expectation to return to their homeland failed, Lithuanian refugees began to settle in foreign countries, including the United States. Most Lithuanians strived to go to cities where strong communities of their fellow-countrymen already existed. Boston was one of those cities. In 1950s with the arrival of new immigrants the life of the Boston Lithuanian community significantly intensified. A circle of exclusively Lithuanian poets focused in this city. Faustas Kirša, Zigmas Gavelis, Antanas Gustaitis, Stasys Santvaras and until 1955 Bernardas Brazdžionis created here. Most of them started their creative way in Lithuania. Despite the limited availability of resources and complicated circumstances Lithuanian Encyclopaedia was issued in Boston. That was the largest encyclopaedic publication of the XX century in the Lithuanian language. Cultural evenings (Kultūriniai subatvakariai) were launched, where lectures on scientific and public topics were arranged, musical evenings were held and art exhibitions presented. When the new dancers joined in 1937 Boston-based folk dance ensemble Sambūris, the activities of it intensified. Also, Boston Lithuanian drama theatre was founded. The publishing house of Lithuanian Encyclopaedia founded by J. Kapočius created favourable conditions for Lithuanian authors to publish. J. Kapočius also showed great organizational skills publishing Lithuanian Encyclopaedia. During the period concerned Vladas Kulbokas focused on the establishment of The Boston Lithuanian School, as well as writing reviews, literary criticism articles and surveys. Meanwhile Stasys Santvaras not only was hosting cultural events, writing articles for emigrant periodicals but also produced two books of poems. Devoting himself to the fostering of Lithuanian consciousness he was an example for other enlightened people of the community.
