Diplomatai dr. Petras Povilas Daužvardis ir Juzefa Rauktytė-Daužvardienė, vyras ir žmona, buvo Lietuvos atstovai JAV. Nuo 1937 m. J. ir P. P. Daužvardžių užimamos konsulinės pareigos Čikagoje, jų įvairios viešos veiklos ir privatūs gyvenimai buvo tampriai susiję su Lietuva ir jos piliečiais krašte ir emigracijoje. Dokumentinė medžiaga, kuri yra saugoma ir prieinama Lietuvoje ir JAV archyvinėse institucijose, iki šiol paskelbta mokslinė literatūra ir išlikusi gyvoji atmintis (t. y. asmenys , kurie pažinojo abu ar vieną iš diplomatų) rekonstruoja Daužvardžių gyvenimo istorijas, o konsulų veikla leidžia „peržengti“ tradicinės biografijos rėmus ir modeliuoti kelis atskirus ir tarpusavy susijusius tinklus: institucinė veikla, vieša veikla, privati veikla. Diplomatų Daužvardžių prigimtinė diplomatija ir patriotizmas gali būti chrestomatiniu pavyzdžiu ir tautiečiui krašte ir emigracijoje.
February 16th holds a significant place in Lithuanian history of the 20th century. In 1918, this date marked the consolidation of the restored Republic of Lithuania’s independence, symbolizing the nation’s freedom. Lithuania and the United States have maintained diplomatic relations for over a century. It’s no coincidence that the Lithuanian Consulate in Chicago was also established on February 16th, 1924, with Povilas Žadeikis serving as the first consul. Following the chronology of events, Antanas Kalvaitis took over the position of Lithuanian consul in Chicago in 1928. Mikas Bagdonas temporarily filled this role from the autumn of 1936 to the spring of 1937. Petras Povilas Daužvardis held the position of Lithuanian consul (later consul general) in Chicago from 1937 to 1971. After his passing, his widow, Juzefa Rauktytė-Daužvardienė, served as the Honorary Consul General of Lithuania in Chicago until the end of 1985 when she resigned due to ill health. The monograph’s text is arranged chronologically, beginning with a brief overview of P.P. Daužvardis’s early life (1895-1914) and his arrival in the United States, due to the scarcity of archival materials. This covers the first decade of his activities in the U.S. (1914-1925). After commencing his studies at Valparaiso University in 1918, he earned a Doctor of Law degree from Washington in 1942. Following several months of work at the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1925, P. P. Daužvardis spent over a decade as a consular officer at the Lithuanian Consulate in New York (1925-1937). During this time, as a vice consul, he served as an assistant and deputy to the consul or consul general, managed the consulate’s affairs, corresponded with institutions and individuals, issued passports and visas, and undertook business trips. On the commemoration of February 16, P. P. Daužvardis would often visit Lithuanian communities.[...]
