The article by Jonas Kievisas and Daiva Pilukiene, “The Impact of Ethnic Culture Related Knowledge and Skills on Schoolchildren’s Sociocultural Integration”, is an analysis of the impact that knowledge and skills of ethnic culture acquired at school have on individuals’ culture and sociocultural integration as a unified and wholly changing system. A schoolchild is an agent that influences school culture and takes part in constant renewal of own experience as well as acquisition of sociocultural integration experience in this school reconstruction process. On the basis of ethnic culture, such experience can be accumulated in the following ways: by organising education-oriented artistic activities (on the academic/lesson/ level); by promoting sociocultural activities and search for artistic expression conditions in non-academic situations (on the extracurricularschool culture level); by an individual’s self-expression in the context of social traditions (on the social out-of-school environment level).
The research carried out by the authors indicates that knowledge of ethnic culture acquired and skills developed in the above-mentioned system are understood in the sense of personal, social and cultural values. Such understanding is helpful while consolidating the system of schoolchildren’s sociocultural self-expression in the sphere of art as a value and as a precondition for lifelong self-development.
The experiment carried out is a proof to the fact that extracurricular activities are important for the educational system at school. Ethnic culture gains importance for a learner when knowledge and skills acquired are used for developing self-expression and related experience in the social environment. In addition, attempts to develop harmony between ethnic culture related knowledge and skills result in problems while matching schoolchildren education with an emphasis on sociocultural integration and respective teacher training with an emphasis on teachers’ competence in the field of ethnic culture implementation.
