Dėstant geografiją ir jos mokant ypač didelę reikšme turi geografijos žemėlapiai. Juose labai tiksliai vaizduojami nedidelių plotų, didžiuliui regionų ir viso Žemės rutulio geografiniai objektai, gamtos ir visuomenės reiškiniai. Straipsnyje nagrinėjama žemėlapio svaiba geografijos mokant, lyriniai parodė, kad mokiniai ir studentai dar nelabai moka naudotis žemėlapiu, jį skaityti, atskleisti priežastingumo ryšius. Nurodomi kai kurie žemėlapio skaitymo Įgūdžių formavimo būdai.
A geographical map is one of the principal means in teaching students geography. Any geographic phenomenon is closely related with the certain part of theory and it is almost impossible to comprehend the natural processes without a map as the map therefore becomes like a signpost for these processes. In practice I noticed that the first year students studying geography have not enough map reading skills, while the teaching of the map reading skills is an important part in training of geography teachers. This situation encouraged me to analyse the role the map is playing during geography lessons and how much attention is paid to the map by a teacher during geography lessons, as well as what the pedagogical purposes for work with the maps are and what the role of the map is in general.
