The survey was conducted as ordered by the Minis- try ofEducation and Science of the Republic of Lithuania in 2004. The article analyses the pupils’ homework as self- studies within the process of continuous learning process. The article aim is to disclose the peculiarities of the pupils’ self-studies while working with the homework appointments. The tasks were as follows: 1) to analyse and compare the pupils and the teachers approach with regards to the purpose of homework; 2) to define the difficulties the pupils face performing the homework appointments and the teachers’ assessment. The survey methods are the document analysis, questionnaire, statistical data analysis, by applying SPSS 10.0 for Windows software. I he scope of survey: 2061 respondents. Out of them - 1615 pupils, 404 teachers, 42 school leaders. It turned out that the pupils relate homework mostly with the direct assessment, but not the meaning of learning. Around a half of the pupils expect to receive a better mark or to live to the expectations of the teacher. Only more than one fourth of the pupils wish to learn the previous lesson better or to get ready for the further studies. The meaning of purpose in fulfilling the homework appointments is more expressed in older age and is more characteristic to the advanced learners. The majority of teachers relate the pupils’ homework purpose with the necessity to consolidate the materials learnt. Less then one third of the pupils indicate that they often come to school having fulfilled all the homework appointments, almost one third fulfil some of the homework appointments in all the subjects. Alongside with the pupils’ age the willingness to fulfil the homework appointments also the willingness to fulfil at least some of the homework appointments stands out. Less than two thirds of the teachers consider, that as a rule the pupils fulfil the written homework appointments, more than a half — the written and oral. The pupils outline the following hardships while fulfilling the homework appointments - the oversize scope of the homework, complicated learn- ing. The homework load, the tiredness of the pupils, laziness while fulfilling their homework grows with age. 1 he hardships experienced by the pupils, while fulfilling their homework appointments are related to the types of schools: the most tired, lagging behind due to the overload due to the too big scope of the appointments are the gymnasium pupils. In the responses of the teachers the hardships while fulfilling the homework assignments are more related with the individual characteristics of the pupil (laziness, failures in learning, failures in comprehension).
