The most important goal of dance education in a comprehensive school is to engage students in processes of cognition of inside and outside world and communication of inner experience by means of dance and to develop skills in these processes. Developing dance skills in early adolescence it is very important to encouridge students to take part in creative dance activities, because these activities have game elements, orientate process towards situation of communication not only with spectators, but also self-communication with a work that was created. Another important point is to activate students ego system, metacognitive and cognitive skills in order to understand dance elements and to express them in a aesthetical way. According to cognitive arts theory dance skills are approached as skills to express dance elements (movement, space, time, force, dynamics) and relate them into solid structure interpretating and communicating inner experience. The period of early adolescence is chosen to examine because of the lack of that kind of research and special problems of arts education in this period. In this article main aspects of creative dance activities that could be used in developing dance skills are pointed out. The result of educational research held with 65 students of 10—12 years old in one comprehensive school showed that in early adolescence, without any purposeful experience in creative dance activities, dance skills are revealed at a low level. In dance education process organised on basis of creative dance activities dance skills of students in early adolescence are revealed at a high level. Research showed that narative type of creative dance expression is more appropriate than an abstract type for students to reveal their dance skills at a higher level.
