Musical expression as well as the whole culture of the two nations, the Lithuanians and the Germans, who lived in Lithuania Minor for long ages spread in close reciprocity because complicated historical relationships of the two nations also touched the sphere of musical life. Folk song of the Lithuanians and Evangelic Lutheran hymn are analysed in the article. The author tries to show the features of the melodics of the folk songs and hymns of the Lithuanians of Lithuania Minor and their interaction with the tradition of German folk music, to analyse the influence of folk song and Lithuanian Protestant hymn on each other in respect of musical text, to estimate the contribution of German scientists, musicians, publishers and other people of culture to the collection and re- search of songs and hymns of Lithuania Minor. The author makes the following conclusions:
- On the plane of ethnic culture the musical life of the Lithuanians of Lithuania Minor was closely connected with the traditions of German musical culture. Despite some influences, Lithuanian folk song and Protestant hymn have preserved their natural singularity and archa- ism.
- Folk song and hymn of Lithuania Minor expe- rienced the influence of each other. The melodies of the folk songs, their intonations, harmony, rhythm and other elements influenced the melodies of the hymns. Local folklore tradition, the folk manner of performance which naturally got mixed up with Evangelic Lutheran hymns have preserved intonational connection with the song folklore of this land.
- The Lithuanian and the German musicians, scientists and culture workers of humanistic beliefs worked in common collecting and propagat- ing Lithuanian folk song and hymn strengthening by this the reciprocity of positive cultural collaboration of the two nations.
