The 8th world conference “Sport and environment” took place in Vancouver (Canada). The motto of the conference was “Innovation and inspiration: harnessing the power of sport for change”. This event was organized by International Olympic Committee which collaborated with United Nations Environment programme (UNEP) and with the Organizing Committee of 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games (VANOC). Plenary and other sessions overlooked winnings and perspectives of IOC commission “Sport and environment” that were gained in 14 years of its existence. There is number of examples how sport can reduce harm done on nature. The participants have discussed how sport can put its contribution in making environmental innovations aiming long term economical and social benefit to be created. One of the accents of the conference was environmental progress in this non constant economical situation. All the regions of the world were touched by this economical decline. A concern about revitalization of the economy dominates in public and in private sectors: “green” factor as partial solution becomes more and more the object of the discussions. What is the influence of the economical landscape on business that fights for “green” principles? Will the “green” technologies and “green” service keep the Planet up? Will economical decline cause bigger dangers to the environment? This economical crisis is global, it affects everyone. While it gives us more challenges it gives us and new unique opportunities in the same way. And in such situation environmental and sustainability aspects must remain in the top of all the priorities. Economics and environment has to go hand in hand that the sustainability principle would be maintained. Sport community also can make its input in development of better environment conditions in towns, regions and countries while such negative economical situation keeps going. It takes time while clean technologies are introduced in developed and developing countries: it needs seven or even more years. Despite the existing economical crisis we must face that it is not the only problem we have. We must face ecological (the most desperate) and spiritual crises too. Aiming to eliminate those phenomena we have to develop a long term strategy. We need to change ourselves and to change other people’s consciousness. The problems that usually are solved by gun must now be managed by the power of propriety. We hope that teachers and mass media will be more active in educating people and, especially, the youth. The generation of young people has to change. And Olympic education that is valuable for its implementation of civilized life style in young individual’s forming must have major influence. The idea that youth should participate in sport much more than it is now is universally acknowledged. The early revealing of the best sustainable development practices and proper education of the future generations about environmental problems will have permanent impact, surely.
