This account aims at depicting 19th century tamizdat, the émigré publishing world in the second half of the century. It offers the genealogy of the various Russian print shops and the major publications in Western Europe – how they defined their missions, how they tried to establish their identities, how they tried to win support, and, of course, how their inventory and ideas passed from generation to generation of émigrés.
