The creative biography of Julius Kaupas is very short: the writer is famous for one published book “Doctor Kripštukas in Hell” (“Daktaras Kripštukas pragare”). This collection of literary tales appeared in exile in 1948. However, it is important to reinterpret these texts by analyzing them as codes of cultural memory. This subject was important to Kaupas; he emphasized it in his articles about culture. This aspect is essential in this research: the purpose of the present analysis is to recognize the cultural codes of Kaupas’s literary tales and to determine the signification of Kaunas’s texts. It can be concluded that the writer created culturally connotative texts: the literary tales stimulate a cultural dialogue and encourage the reader to try to understand what urban culture means. Kaupas’s texts are unique in that they already reveal an urban cultural heritage in which the cityscape becomes very important.
