[Expression of attributes of science subjects in texts]
    research article[2005][S4][H004][4]
    Markūnaitė, Ona
Žmogus ir žodis / Man and the Word, 2005, vol. 7, no. 1, p. 92-95

The article deals with the expression of attributes of science subjects in popular scientific texts. In these texts, subjects are characterised by attributes of several types. Taking into account the frequency of the usage of attributes, they can fall into two groups: 1) the main (dominating) attributes and 2) additional attributes that expand information or make it more precise. The main attributes are expressed by (a) nationality or place of residence (country, city, town, etc.) and (b) academic activity or career (academic degree, profession, position, etc.). The combination of these attributes is the most often means of the expression of science subjects. taking into account the character of information presented, additional attributes can be either neutral or subjective. Neutral attributes convey essential facts (e. g., scientific inventions, evaluation of academic activity, connections, time) while subjective attributes transmit the author's personal point of view or estimation.

[The use of metaphors in popular science texts]
    research article[2010][S4][H004][7]
Žmogus ir žodis : mokslo darbai. Didaktinė lingvistika, 2010, vol. 12, no. 1, p. 128-134

The existence of particular metaphor models may be found in the popular scientific texts that disclose a general trend of conceptualization and verbalization of the knowledge being popularized. Thus, it is possible to speak about universal metaphorization strategies characteristic of popular scientific texts, i.e. specific universal metaphoric transfer ways which are important for naming things, attributes, actions, states, etc. (an attempt is made to ensure an adequate perception of the news conveyed). The goal of this article is to analyze metaphors used in popular scientific texts that have not been thoroughly analyzed until the present time, as well as to identify their possible models. The research material was collected from popular scientific articles and books of Lithuanian authors intended for the public at large. A productive field of metaphorical giving meaning to popular scientific texts is MAN. Possible metaphor models is MAN – A BEING (metaphoric nomination takes place according to the names of man’s body parts, appearance, character traits, emotional qualities, feelings), MAN – A SOCIAL SUBJECT (a representative model of metaphors in MAN’S ACTIVITIES and components thereof; the results of activities cover domestic life, everyday and vocational activities, culture, social ties). A model of NATURE metaphor may be distinguished in popular science texts. This model is represented by zoological, biological and landscape metaphors. It was established that anthropomorphism dominates in popular science texts whereas the model of NATURE metaphor occupies a peripheral place.
