The article analyses the problem of the re-socialization of convicts. The conditions encouraging the positiveness and effectiveness of the process of re-socialization are revealed here, namely, the constant process, continuity, specialists’ improvement of professional skills and the like. The generalized scientific (academic) literature is illustrated (grounded) by the empirical research data. While presenting the research data, the conclusion that convicts have evident educational needs is made. Besides, convicts who do not have a secondary education commit the highest number of crimes. It also comes into light that younger convicts (aged between 18 and 24) are more motivated in a professional sense than people of other age groups (ages). Through the analysis of the research data it is shown that convicts who have grown up in the families of their biological parents maintain warm and open mutual relationships with their parents more often than those who have not been raised in their biological families. In addition, the majority of the convicted project their future in prison (70 %). More than 60 % of respondents plan to ensure their means of subsistence legally after the release from prison.

Social integration of the convicts and people discharged from the institutions of imprisonment is one of the negotiable issues in our country. Re-socialization phenomenon has been widely discussed in recent scientific educology references following the advanced experience of such countries as Canada, Scandinavia etc. This experience would make the convicts' reintegration process easier and it would prevent criminality, especially the repeated one. According to European experience, the more convicts there are in the society, the higher the level of criminality is: the spread of psychosocial vices starts in the society and in the course of time it is more difficult to control it. Existing re-socialization system of the convicts and people discharged from the institutions of imprisonment in Lithuania is not adequate. The survey aim is to reveal the convicts' re-socialization expectations. The task is 1) to describe the re-socialization state of the convicts with reference to scientific and empirical research data; 2) to reveal the convicts' educational needs. The survey objective is the convicts' re-socialization expectations. Survey results from the European Communities initiative Equal program implementation project "Crossroad: Coalition for Strengthening Equal Possibilities in the Labour Market" have been used in this article. The target group of the survey is 113 convicts (males) at the Lukiskes Inquisition Ward—Prison whose release is due in less than one year. According to the survey data, the conclusion is that people having lower than secondary education commit the majority of crimes. Moreover, younger convicts (18—24 years old) are more motivated from the vocational point of view than people of other age groups. It has also been defined that convicts brought up by their biological parents have warmer and more open relationship with them than those who were not raised in such families. In addition, the majority of convicts.

The article analyses problems occurring while implementing arts activities organized for the inmates at the penitentiary institutions in Lithuania. The survey conducted in Lukiškes prison, Vilnius 2nd Correction House and Panevėžys Correction House revealed that fine arts, music and drama activities are carried out there and are useful for the prisoners since their help positively change their system of values and behaviour. But only a small part of inmates have an opportunity to participate in these activities. Artistic activity is one of the ways to direct the creative power of offenders for the positive internal change, to contribute to their better self-understanding and to seek change in their lives and, thus, become useful members of society. It is concluded that it is relevant and necessary to develop artistic activities and/or art therapy activities at Lithuanian penitentiary institutions, to create possibilities for a better accessibility of workshops for convicts and to train competent professionals to carry out this work.
