Restoration of independence in Lithuania created a need for many new terms in various spheres of life, including business. New phenomena had to be named in Lithuanian, so terms began to be coined or borrowed. Quite a few English business terms are metaphorical in nature, and terminology – Lithuanian terminology included – is rather cautious about the use of metaphors in terms. The aim of the present research was to carry out a contrastive analysis of metaphorical business terms in English and to reveal the specificity of the Lithuanian equivalents offered in their translation. The analysis shows that metaphorical meaning is retained in only about one third of Lithuanian business terms, while the rest are either non-metaphorical terms or, in some cases, not terms at all but extended definitions or paraphrases.
