The article focuses on the ways of translation into the Lithuanian language of the selected anthroponyms and toponyms appearing in the novel Krzyżacy (Knights of the Teutonic Order) by H. Sienkiewicz. The analysis shows that the translator applied various translation tech-niques. In order to maintain the sociological function, the translator most frequently chose an inflectional transposition, i.e. incorporated the original proper names into the Lithuanian declination by adding appropriate inflectional endings. If there appeared, in anthroponyms or toponyms, letters or letter combinations foreign to the Lithuanian language, the translator simultaneously applied phonological and pho-netic transposition. Some of the proper names underwent adaptation. These were mainly anthroponyms referring to the Lithuanian historical figures, as well as toponyms which have Lithuanian equivalents origi-nating in the historical past. Some anthroponyms, such as the names of the coats of arms, nicknames of main characters, as well as topo-nyms, were translated due to a certain semantic value.
