Abstract

The goal of the thesis – to provide guidelines for pastoral care in Lithuania for people with addictions.
In order to achieve the above mentioned goal, it is appropriate to examine the emergence and history of the concept of "addictions" attentively and from different perspectives, analyse how scientific, societal and Church attitudes have evolved into diverse forms of addiction.
The thesis focuses on disclosing how medical science has achieved and established the belief that addiction is a serious chronic disease. This concept is also accepted by the teaching of the Church inciting not for condemnation or moralization, but for help providing to addicts and their relatives. Fruitful support is complicated because addicted person denies the disease for a long time, during this period develops an addictive personality, that sabotages the natural needs of the human being.
From a Christian anthropology point of view, addiction diseases destroy an individual at the physical, mental, spiritual and social levels. This means that support as well as rehabilitation have to be complex and cover all of the above mentioned levels.
The thesis focuses not only on a better understanding of the situation of the addicted person, but also on the development of the disease, different addiction coping strategies: one dimensional, oriented to quick changes at one dimension, and complex strategies that are time consuming and holistic, when recovering embrace different areas of human being. From the Christian anthropology point of view it is concluded that complex strategies are more fruitful and sustainable, they provide the Church and the State wide cooperation opportunities.
The thesis emphasizes that there is no universal, all situations covering Catholic support program for addicted persons and their relatives, however, the universal fundamental principles could be discussed, “good practices" examples in other countries could be studied and wisely implemented here and now.
Fruitful pastoral help to an addicted person and his relatives is primarily related to the restoration of the sane self-love and love for people that are close, and this is obviously closely related to the change of the distorted perception of God. It is important not only to have the ill person and his relatives back to participation in religious practices formally, but also to help him regain the sense of dignity and confidence in the benevolence of the Creator.
It is also very important that the pastoral care of addicts is not just "us" (the healthy members of a Church) supporting “them" (that are in crisis), it is an impulse to cherish the community where there is a place for every individual, where the believers can share their burdens and enrich each other. It is possible only when there is no "us - them" apportionment and pastoral care of any specific group of individuals is not perceived as "rescuing", but as a healing openness to the behest of love, without that, as Pope Francis emphasizes, any religious community loses vitality and starts to perish.
On the other hand, while shaping the pastoral model for persons with addictions, it is important to keep in mind that the Church it is not a medical institution; Church seeks Salvation, so "existential anesthesia", and satisfaction with "lukewarm comfort" life is not enough.
Key words: addiction, disease, pastoral care, anthropology, basic needs, Church, sane self-love.
