This research paper demonstrates the importance diaconia as a mode of action of Caritas. The diaconia, the merciful love for the Church, is not a peculiar social help to be left to the others, but is the necessary expression of the essence of Church, inseparable from its nature. The organized action of Caritas is understood as a part of the pastoral action of the Church.
In Lithuania the organized action of Caritas is called to respond to the current challenges in the society, such as loneliness and emotional abandonment, meaning that the action of Caritas has to be related not only with the giving of a material support but also it is the openness to respond to the deepest needs of a person, which underlines the understanding that Caritas has to help a person as a whole: his or her spiritual and material needs.
The problem, discussed in this research paper, is the insufficient disclosure of Caritas as a diaconia, since it is an inseparable part of its nature and absolute expression of the essence of the Church. The aim of the research paper is to describe Caritas as diaconia - a mode of action which needs to find a way to strengthen the activity of Caritas in the Catholic Church in Lithuania. The research paper is based on the Catholic social teaching (the documents of Benedict XVI and other social encyclicals) and the theological concept of Caritas by R. Gehring (2015).
The following methods were used in this research paper: the analysis and synthesis of sources (documents of the Catholic Church, various studies and other sources), the half-structured individual interview, the quantitative analysis of narrative research data. 12 persons have participated in the study, who are directly responsible for the work of Caritas (5 bishops, 3 lay leaders, 4 leading priests on the dieocesan, diaconate or parish level).
In the research paper I have emphasized the mode of action of diaconia in Caritas. There is stated, that it is the essential part of the Church ministry to seek serving with mercy and love. I have given an overview of the aspects of theology of Caritas, which stresses that there is too little attention given nowadays to this subject and a more detailed studies are necessary to understand the works of mercy and love of the deeper and better perception of the Church. The outcomes of the empirical study showed that Caritas, by strenghtening the concept of diaconia as the essential mode of action of Caritas, is possible through the education and formation fields, as well as concrete fields of action. The education and formation of Caritas workers in systematic and deeper understanding the nature of Caritas means an inseparable understanding of diaconia as an essential part of the Church action. This notion shapes the identity of a believer and empowers him/her to assume the responsibility of a active faith. The concrete fields of action and the development of particular activities by recognizing the needs of community empowers the entire Church for organized, professional and community-based ministry.
