Investigation of mycoremediation and phytoremediation of creosote treated used wooden railway sleepers
Wooden railway sleepers are usually impregnated by creosote, coal tar and other impregnants, which provide insecticidal, fungicidal and bactericidal properties to prolong their lifetime. About 2000 tonnes of waste wooden railway sleepers are accumulated every year in Lithuania, 0.5 - 1 million tonnes in Europe and about 2.85 million tonnes worldwide. Bioremediation technologies can be used for the degradation and/or the transformation of polluting compounds in less toxic forms. The studies of used creosote impregnated wooden sleepers bioremediation are described in this doctoral dissertation. The aim of the thesis was to screen and evaluate the efficiency of selected fungi and plants in the bioremediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from the creosote impregnated used wooden railway sleepers. The screening of fungi for mycoremediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons was carried out and their ligninolytic and cellulolytic activity were evaluated. Among them the most efficient for mycoremediation in vitro were selected. Herbal plant species were selected for the phytoremediation and bioindication experiments. Locally growing T. patula L., P. annua L., T. repens L., O. sativus Brot. plant species were selected for the phytoremediation and bioindication. The evaluation of the ecotoxicity of the bioremediated matrices revieled that the most efficient mycoremediation is obtained using P. ostreatus SMR 648 and Pleurotus sp. VMU 001 strains.
Atrinkti T. patula L., P. annua L., T. repens L., O. sativus Brot. augalai kreozotu impregnuotos medienos fitoremediacijai ir teršalų bioindikacijai.
