PSO (Pasaulinės sveikatos organizacijos) 2017 metų duomenimis, pasaulyje autizmo spektro sutrikimą turi 1 iš 160 vaikų (WHO-World Health Organization, 2017).
According to the data of WHO (World Health Organization) in the year 2017, 1 out of 160 children has autism spectrum disorder in the world (WHO-World Health Organization, 2017). This study, from a scientific point of view, involves examining parental experiences in growing the child which has autism spectrum disorders, providing purposeful systematic presentation of information, as well as providing recommendations to help parents with the subject of this question. The purpose of the study is to examine the experiences of parents growing the child with autism spectrum disorder. Three tasks have been set to achieve the goal:
- To reveal the concept and peculiarities of the autism spectrum disorder.
- To reveal the significance of the autism spectrum disorder in the family circle.
- To examine the experiences of parents growing the child with autism spectrum disorder and the need for assistance for parents. There were used two study methods, i.e. analysis of scientific sources and qualitative study, interviews. The study involved seven persons, from 30 to 40 years old and the children participants in the study were from 7 to 10 years old. After analyzing the results of the study, it was found that the parents experience psychological and emotional distresses that are related to the reactions of parents to various situations when children use certain physical activities (e.g. violence, injuring themselves or physical abuse) in order to reduce emotional tension. The parents experience stress and tension, but they share their experiences with the other parents, so in order to improve their psychological feelings, but the parents have a lack of social assistance, and the qualifications and competences of the staff are in some cases insufficient to help them to grow a child with autism spectrum disorder. There are indicated specific forms of help, i.e. psychological help and the help of integrating the child into society. During the analysis it was found that the help of the close people and a positive reaction to the disease are very important. Many persons felt close peoples support, and states that it had a positive impact on the entire family and the child's emotional state and the course of the illness, but it is also indicated that some relatives ignore the diagnosis and reacted hostilely and even blamed their parents. The parents who grow children with autism spectrum disorder face negative social experience. Society in some cases has a negative attitude to the children having autism spectrum disorder, and it is indicated that the society lacks knowledge about the children with autism spectrum disorder and their behavior.
