The COVID-19 pandemic is, in a sense, a new phenomenon, as it is the first global epidemiological problem facing society since the age of the Internet and digital communications. The rapid spread of information about the virus, the abundance of information of varying accuracy, and the frequent influx of unverified, unsubstantiated information led to a phenomenon that the World Health Organization described as an "infodemia."
