In 1914 the well-known activist of the Lithuanian national re-awakening, Juozas Gabrys, while visiting the United States endeavored to convene an assembly of Lithuanians in America for the purpose of deciding on the contours of Lithuanian statehood, which the onset of World War I gave hope of reestablishing. Despite clear political divisions within the U.S. Lithuanian community, a large part of it supported aspirations for Lithuanian independence on the basis of ethnicity and envisioned guidelines by which relations with neighborly states might be forged. This was the first important conference of (part of) the Lithuanian nation after the Great Assembly of Vilnius in 1905; it further specified and in a sense fortfied the latter's resolutions.
