Abstract: Here fragments from Kazys Almenas’s diary are presented—those that concern processes in American society, as indicated by the very title (American Notebook) of this part of the diary. It may be called a “diary“ only conditionally: the reader won’t find almost any personal experiences or events recorded here. It’s an unusual “diary“ in another respect, too: the entries in this notebook were done only every few years, but this allows an as it were detached look at America and at the cultural and technological changes going on in it. The entire text manifests the author’s sufficiently critical but well-supported views on American realities
