1990 m. Lietuvos Nepriklausomybės atkūrimas tapo kokybiškai naujo valstybės raidos etapo pradžia. 1990–2010-ieji yra paženklinti politinės, ekonominės, socialinės ir kultūrinės kaitos žyme. Tad Nepriklausomos valstybės dvidešimtmetis yra tam tikras (gal labiau net simbolinis) atskaitos taškas, kai reikia atsigręžti ir pradėti vertinti per šį laikotarpį atliktus darbus. Todėl šiuo straipsniu siekiama aptarti pokyčius, kuriuos lėmė politinės sanklodos kaita, pagrindiniu tyrimų objektu pasirenkant menotyros lauke dirbančias institucijas ir aukštąsias mokymo įstaigas. Svarbu pastebėti, kad išsamesni šios kaitos tyrimai kol kas dar nėra atlikti. Prieš pradedant praėjusių dviejų dešimtmečių menotyros mokslo apžvalgą instituciniu aspektu, pravartu trumpai prisiminti paskutinių sovietmečio metų kultūrines tendencijas. [...]
Declaration of independence in Lithuania had an influence on the quantitative and qualitative change of art history research. In addition to the art history departments of the Architecture Institute working from the Soviet times, a small unit of the Academy of Sciences grew into a solid separate Lithuanian Culture Research Institute, Art history Institute was established at Vilnius Academy of Fine Arts; Faculty of Arts was founded at the re-established Vytautas Magnus University. The possibilities to study the ancient art and architecture layers barely explored by the time opened up for the researchers of art and architecture. Current researches focused on the search of self-identity became the priority areas: the sacred, ethnic heritage, the composite Great Duchy of Lithuania art culture, the increased attention paid to the architectural and cultural heritage identification of the estates and disclosure of the twentieth century interwar art heritage. Inter-cultural relations of Lithuania with the Eastern, Central and Western Europe are being investigated, slips of the influences and directions are being revealed. Analysis of the contemporary culture and art processes is not left behind. Not only expanded circle of problems is evident over the past twenty years, but also the spread of interdisciplinary research. It is important to state a fact, that art history science does not have mandatory research areas and covers various spheres of the Lithuanian multicultural heritage, which are defined by the researchers themselves.
