65 Streamlining the optimisation of Sustainable Thermal Energy systems and Prototype technologies in process industriesItem type:Project, Tarptautinis / International2024-10-01 - 2028-09-30. European process industries face significant challenges in a changing geopolitical landscape, under the threat of climate change and against fierce international competition. In this context, boosting the resilience and competitiveness of process industries, while taking surefooted steps towards climate neutrality is of existential importance. StreamSTEP is the vision of 31 organisations across EU, Switzerland, Norway and UK, aspiring to trigger significant improvements of how heating energy is managed within industrial processes. The project will address processes that generate waste heat across all temperature grades, from 135oC to over 1400oC, deploying five innovative heat exchanger prototypes for challenging applications and achieving flexible operation across multiple heat sinks. Heat upgrade will be managed through high temperature heat pumps, achieving outlet temperatures at 150oC and at 215oC, with improved performance through ejector technology and the capacity to operate dynamically across a range of required temperatures. Enablers of these innovations are advanced manufacturing techniques, achieving superior material performance through novel material alloys. The system will be demonstrated across five sectors: non-ferrous metals, ceramics, minerals, plastics and refining. The demonstrators will be supported by impact boosting resources, de-risking the investment and accelerating commercialisation. A holistic process digital twinning pipeline will be integral to these advancements, as it will provide the infrastructure to deploy powerful optimisation agents, addressing energy balance, intermediary storage, GHG avoidance and data-driven LCA. The effects of the StreamSTEP project will be significant, as the recovery and efficient reutilisation of the majority of waste heat (50%-over 90%) will be achieved, with systems boasting a payback below 3 years, with the added effects of increasing productivity in selected processes, as well as energy flexibility.
60 PRocess Innovations for the Mineral industry focusing on ROasting and Calcination Kiln technologies and supported by novel pre- and post-processingItem type:Project, Tarptautinis / International2024-10-01 - 2028-09-30. PRIM-ROCK addresses process efficiency through a multifaceted strategy addressing industrial processes from input to output, supported by an ambitious digital framework and transversal supporting activities. In particular, advanced techniques for the pre-processing of the raw material will be deployed to enhance its efficiency according to the requirements of the process, supplemented by simulations and decision support systems to increase the operational limits of flexibility in the feedstock domain. Additionally, the process intensification component of the project will design, develop, and validate innovative and efficient processes, as well as optimizing the existing ones. The aim is to develop a portfolio of technologies to a higher resource efficiency and lower level of GHG emissions of extractive industries. The project will focus on improving the resource efficiency of the calcination and roasting processes, that are commonly used in the mineral and cement industries. To this end, process simulations in collaboration with AI data-driven models will be utilized and a digital twin for each process will be developed. Finally, waste reduction and re-utilization strategies will be investigated targeting to the realtime processes’ adjustment capabilities to feedstock changes and tighter processing control solutions. All these components will be supplemented by transversal supporting activities, such as technoeconomic assessment, LCA, standardization etc. The PRIM-ROCK solutions will be demonstrated in 3 different ASPIRE sectors, namely Minerals (magnesite, laterite), Cement (limestone) and Non-ferrous metals (sphalerite, chalcopyrite). The consortium is composed of 7 SMEs along with 6 RTDs, 3 universities and 5 large enterprises, working together to achieve over 30% resource efficiency enhancement in each use-case, 770ktCO2 averted, productivity increase in the range 9-16% and more that 1,360 new jobs by 2033.

100 Green Farm (LIFE22-GIC-LT-GFarm for LIFE)Item type:Project, Tarptautinis / International2023-06-01 - 2026-05-31. The European Commission (EC) proposes to expand the scope of the land use, land-use change and forestry sector (LULUCF) to include all agriculture in LULUCF from 2031. According to the EC proposal, this common Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sector must achieve climate neutrality at the EU level by 2035. The regulation is being revised to increase the integration of the agricultural and forestry sector into climate change management policies. Achieving greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction targets requires a careful assessment of GHG calculation methodologies and a closer look at soils high in organic carbon. Thus, a systematic and unified ecosystem model is needed for more accurate, objective and reliable AFOLU sector GHG assessment, taking into account national values and factors. The carbon farming initiative was launched to integrate those sectors more smoothly, and is seen as an important factor for generating a real shift in the AFOLU sector’s contribution to EU climate targets. The EC developed a carbon farming technical guidance handbook for setting up and implementing results-based carbon farming mechanisms in the EU. The carbon farming initiative provides financial incentives for climate-friendly activities, creating a new source of income for farmers and land owners. Linked to this initiative is the development of a regulatory framework for certifying carbon removals based on robust and transparent carbon accounting to monitor and verify their authenticity, as part of the Circular Economy Action Plan. Such carbon removals should be rewarded either via the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) or other public or private carbon markets. The target to establish and implement a GHG accounting system at farm level by 2025 is included in the National Climate Change Agenda of Lithuania. It is therefore necessary to develop a unified ecosystem model involving all stakeholders, using state-of-the-art technologies and solutions and related experience. The GFarm for LIFE project seeks to create systemic change in part of Lithuania's AFOLU sector and governance regarding GHG emission reduction by implementing carbon farming initiatives which contribute to achieving national and EU climate change mitigation and adaptation.
