The modern higher education institution encounters many challenges that prompt search for new methods enabling assurance of its performance’s quality. Total Quality Management (TQM), which was outspread throughout the industry sector in the second half of the 20th century, nowadays more often and to a larger extent is being applied to improve higher education institutions’ performance quality. Though various scientific sources refers TQM as a philosophy and quality management theory, the articles’ authors deal with this concept of management basically from a practical point of view and identify it with a set of models based on TQM principles. Generally, higher education institutions apply ISO 9000 series quality standards, the European Foundation for Quality Management Excellence Model and the General Assessment Model developed in accordance with the Excellence Model. Applicability of TQM models at higher education institutions is controversially evaluated. Authors of this article were therefore prompted to go deep into research of the peculiarities of application of TQM models in Lithuanian higher education institutions. Survey, in which representatives from 31 higher education institutions took part, was conducted in 2010 and it provided an assessment, more exact and in more detail, of what the situation is regarding introduction of TQM models in the Lithuanian higher education institutions, as well as problems, results, stimuli and restrictions related to it. A comparative analysis reveals diversity of the experience of TQM models application in different types of the higher education institutions.
