Abstract: The aim of this work was to research the change of high skill level rowers' physical development, physical working capacity and functional abilities in the yearly training cycle, to establish the effectiveness of the workouts applied and also to predict the ways for further improvement in rowers' preparation. The change of Lithuanian racing-four kayak rowers team physical development, physical working capacity and functional abilities in the 1997-1998 year season was investigated. It was researched that big physical load carried out by the rowers has not exerted influence upon the change in physical development indices. There was no change observed in muscle weight, but the muscle anaerobic-alactatic power has remarkably increased; the glycolytic reactions did not grow more actively. The greatest aerobic capacity was demonstrated by the rowers in the second half of the preparatory period. During the competitive period, the aerobic capacity and the functional level of cardiovascular system had the tendency to decrease. We suppose that during the competitive period more attention should be paid to the increase of aerobic capacity, and the ways forthe activation of glycolitic reactions ought to be found due to the main competition in near future
