Nowadays the importance of music education for the schoolchildren’ development is not questionable. Although the attention is given to new methods, new ways of conveying the knowledge, most schoolchildren are interested in popular music only. The limited number of them attend concerts, operas, ballets. The solution of this problem could be found improving the elder teenagers’ emotional states in music lessons if they influence the development of teenagers’ music interests. The article reveals the results of the research which was carried out in a secondary school and a gymnasium of Vilnius in the 10th forms. The target group included 126 schoolchildren. The research aim was to establish the connection between the elder teenagers’ emotional states which were experienced in the music lessons and the music interests. The methods used in the research were: analysis of the literature, respondents’ questionnaires, correlational analysis. The data obtained was processed according to the Programme SPSS 11.5. The conclusions of the study can be stated as follows. It turned out that the most expressed music interest was listening to foreign popular music. The concerts of the classical music, the music schools or even the music lessons do not get much elder teenagers’ attention. The results of the research demonstrated that the main reason for the formation of the poor music interests was the negative emotional states such as the boredom and the indifference in music lessons. The research showed the meaningful correlation between the emotional states experienced in music lessons and the elder teenagers’ music interests. The bad and formal relationship between the teacher and the elder teenager in its turn was the main reason for the formation of the negative emotional states and influenced the schoolchildrens’ choice to improve their musical knowledge in the music lessons in the 11–12 th forms.
