The article reviews theoretical and practical issues of the Polish intonation: its status, the degree to which it is analysed and problems of the practical teaching of intonation. Intonation is a linguistic universal that functions and is analysed not only in linguistics but also elsewhere (in literature studies, psychology, oratory, medicine, even in criminology, etc.). It is clear that the intonation of the Polish language is comparatively very insufficiently analysed. More attention has been paid to its functional aspect, less - to a phonetic one. The linguistic status of the intonation as well as the status of the whole Polish intonation system remains undetermined. The intonation units have not been singled out or analysed with the help of the methods of experimental phonetics. This article attempts, using English, Russian and partly Lithuanian experience of the analysis of intonation, to present one of the possible ways of the description of the Polish intonation (systemic analysis) and its practical appliance in the teaching process.
