It is obvious that the mere awareness of ecological problems, also development of social awareness about them, without which it is hardly possible to prevent ecological catastrophe, is not enough. In the 20th century, humanity took the path of sustainable development. In order to ensure stability in the future, it is necessary to change global economy, demographic policy, rethink many values, and give up the harmful way of life in many areas. All of these tasks are related to ecological awareness, which, as one of the greatest social transformations in the history of humanity, may come together with agrarian and industrial transformation. People, having knowledge about ecology, with pro-ecological and rational thinking, capable of making correct and ecologically based decisions are essential in the implementation of ecological awareness. This poses new perspective challenges to the educational system, the solution of which will help to reorganize positively social and ecological conditions, change political and ideological life. Education, highlighting human virtues, contributing to the development of society, providing knowledge of human self-esteem, character and social behaviour, becomes a path to self and the world preservation....
Sustainable development seeks to preserve not only the present humanity, but also the ability of future generations to meet their needs based on human values. In order to achieve sustainable development, a person cannot ignore social and economic aspects, as it becomes the basis of human well-being while preserving nature with all its resources. Nature conservation is the basis for fulfilling human needs regardless of the values of different people. Sustainable development involves not only the preservation of natural values but also the promotion of quality of life, and this can only be achieved through education of each individual and the society as a whole. Public education promotes not only the transformation of every human being, but also of all humanity, which is possible through changing the attitude to the world, as a gift to a human, and it also leads to sustainability. Sustainable development is possible through ecological awareness of society, which, because of its social significance, occupies a special place in scientific knowledge. Ecological education helps to understand the scale and danger of ecological problems that have already reached a critical level. In today’s world, ecological awareness is formed when changes in nature and human relationships are perceived as well as the causes of industrial activities, which leads to the recognition of the need to solve ecological problems. The ecological crisis, affecting the health and safety of people, is still not fully understood in the education system. This led to the fact that in the 20th century ecological education was described as a process of acquiring knowledge about environmental problems, reasons for their occurrence, and the necessity for their practical solution possibilities. Because of the wrong approach to eco-education, most people have a poorly developed need to solve ecological problems practically, and their approach to nature is consumer-friendly.
