and lack of motivation. Nevertheless, group work method is rarely used in engineering studies and if used, it is applied to various project activities. During the 2016/2017 academic year, group work method was used three times to teach the study subject “Strength of materials”: once with students of Agricultural Engineering and twice with students of Water and Land Management. Before starting the work, every student filled in the survey questionnaires which helped to evaluate their social and learning to learn competencies. After every group work session, students wrote down their reflections. In students’ opinion, not only professional, but also personal skills are developed during group work. These include communication, collaboration, learning from each other. Such analysis of the reflections on group work and students competencies allows to explain the reasons of the success or failure. Also, when these results are discussed with students, it helps to increase their motivation to learn and to develop professional as well as social and personal competencies because they focus on successful studying factors. Finally, the applicability of this method to solve various tasks of strength of materials during contact time was evaluated. It was established that it can be complicated to apply the group work method, because of the limited time during contact time in class, the success of task becomes uncertain when students do not possess the experience of team work or the level of their knowledge is insufficient. However such experience will not be gained if the use of this active method is refused.
The study subject “Strength of materials” is taught to students of several engineering study programs in Aleksandras Stulginskis University. The aim of all of these study programs is to prepare professionals who would be capable to think critically and creatively, to perform analyses, to participate in the discussions, to communicate and to work independently as well as in team. In order to establish how this aim could be reached by applying the group work method to contact time in the university, it was chosen to carry out the analysis of group work method application’s experience. The following research methods were used – scientific literature review, study process observation, questionnaire surveys, quantitative and qualitative data analysis. Firstly, the theoretical background of group work method was discussed. Literature review showed that group work method helps students to develop individual as well as team work competencies and it helps educators to solve the problems of insufficient level of knowledge
