Coarse dead wood is well documented to be one of the key elements in the forest ecosystem (Nordén et al., 2004; Aakala, 2010; Franklin et al., 1987). Yet, the knowledge about its amount, distribution in different forms and dynamic are still very scarce, especially referencing to a different management regime. The aim of this study was to evaluate an amount and formation dynamic of coarse dead wood in scot pine forests located in the eastern part of Lithuania. The research was carried out in the Ažvinčiai strict nature reserve and managed forests near by, both in premature and mature stands. The coarse dead wood formation during a period of last 29 years in a nature reserve was 2,5 m3/ha, and in managed forests 4,5 m3/ha annually. In accordance with decomposition and wood loos during logging currently in managed and nature reserve forests respectively there are 19,2% (24,9 m3/ha) and 60,8% (48,5 m3/ha) of coarse dead wood which has formed in the study area since 1986.
