Phytoremediation is a technology based on usage of plants to remove pollutants from the contaminated soil. Phytoremediation is environmentally friendly and cost-effective alternative to current remediation technologies. This review outlines general aspects of phytoremediation along with discussions about the advantages and limitations of this technology. Moreover, it includes various detailed descriptions of phytoremediation processes: phytoextraction, phytofiltration, phytostabilization, phytovolatilization, phytodegradation, rhizodegradation and phytodesalination. It also covers a comprehensive research and achievements of phytoremediation.
