Experiments were carried out in the Experimental Station of Lithuanian University of Agriculture in 2009-2010. Soil type was Hapli-Epihypogleyic Luvisol. Two winter rape varieties - 'Sunday' (linear) and 'Kronos' (hybrid) were studied in the field experiment. The aim of the research was to determine the influence of sowing time and type of cultivar on changes of chemical composition of winter rape. After the renewal of plants vegetation during the winter period, linear rapes were more likely tend to use accumulative materials than hybrid rapes, resulting in deterioration of their ability to winter. After the renewal of vegetation in autumn, the dry matter content in upper bud of winter hybrid rapes 'Kronos' had a tendency to increase. After the renewal of vegetation in spring, both varieties of winter rapes which were sowed early (10th and 20 * August) started to accumulate dry matter in upper buds fastest. The amount of total sugar in apical bud of hybrid winter rape sown on September decreased slower than in linear variety sown at the same time. The experiment revealed that later sown hybrid oilseed rape overwinters better. After start of the spring vegetation, dry matters in apical bud started to accumulate fastest in both varieties of winter rapes which were sown at 10 and 20th of August. Hybrid rape sowed at 30th of August at the start of spring vegetation had been accumulated in average 7,9% more dry matters than linear.
