The article presents the testing results related to performance parameters of a four stroke, four cylinder, water cooled, turbocharged, direct injection (93 kW) diesel engine of a light duly automobile "VW Golf1 operating in a real traffic conditions of Marijampoie city. The puipose of the research is to examine the driving speed changing behaviour of a light duty car with a special respect to loading conditions of the diesel engine and its performance parameters when driving a car on streets of the city. Experiments have been performed 7.30 h and 17.10 h. The performance parameters of the when driving a car along chosen 5.8 km route on streets of the city (Fig. 1) in Monday, Thursday and Friday at 7.30 h and 17.10 h. The performance parameėters of the engine have been monitored and recorded by using "OBD Log" modulus and "OBD-Log SW Suite" programme. It was determined that on the streets of Marijampole an averaged driving speed of a car is approximately 33 km/h therefore it takes 11 minutes in total to overcome a distance of 5.8 kin. A car with mechanical gear box. was normally driven with a second or third gear engaged, 23.0% and 53.5% respectively, that compiles 76.5% of time spent on streets of the city. Because of a frequent braking and acceleration of the car performance of the engine was unstable that determined a higher diesel fuel consumption and bigger amounts of harmful emissions produced. In order to diminish traffic jams on the streets of Marijampole it would be reasonable to disclose their emerging reasons and then take measures necessary for reducing of ambient air pollution in the city of Marijampole.
