Antanas Stancevičius (1920–2007) was an outstanding Lithuanian agronomist, botanist, pioneer in the field of geobotanical research in the country, researcher of agricultural systems and crop rotations, a public figure, professor of the Lithuanian Academy of Agriculture (since 1996 Lithuanian University of Agriculture, LUA), educator of specialists in agriculture and scientific staff, author of abundant scientific heritage. Antanas Stancevičius was born on 8 January, 1920 in Lomiai village, Batakiai district, Tauragė region. In 1927–1929 he attended a primary school in Raseiniai and in 1938 finished the Raseiniai State Gymnasium (currently the Kalno Secondary School). In 1938–1942, he took a full course of lectures at the Faculty of Agronomy, Lithuanian Academy of Agriculture (in Dotnuva). In 1943, he was granted the name of certified agronomist after defending his diploma thesis “Weeds in winter crop in autumn” in which he generalized research data collected over 1942–1943 while working as an assistant at the Weed Department of the Plant Protection Station (Dotnuva). In 1943–1946, Antanas Stancevičius worked as an agronomist at the Tobacco Growing Centre and the Aniškis Soviet Farm in Alytus region. He worked as a pedagogue at the Lithuanian Academy (University) of Agriculture for 57 years: as an assistant and senior lecturer at the Department of Botany and Microbiology in 1947–1953, senior lecturer at the Department of Plant Growing in 1953–1955, senior lecturer at the Department of Agriculture in 1955–1961, associate professor in 1961–1990, professor in 1990–2004, and Professor Emeritus from 2004 till death.
