Research was conducted at the Lithuanian University of Agriculture (LUA), Departament of Agricultural Energetics and the Lithuanian Institute of Agricultural Engineering (LIAE), Division of Energetics during 1999-2002. Literature sources suggest that electromagnetic field, or electric and magnetic fields, cause physiological-biochemical changes in seed. Treatment with these fields increases water absorption rate, respiration rate of the germinating seed and raises seed viability. A rewiew of the data on the use of electromagnetic fields for stimulating seed viability obtained by various researchers revealed that the studies and data on seed germination dynamics are scarse. Our tests were conducted with carrot, red beet and barley seed using corona disharge field of constant currenr and alternating magnetic field. In our tests we determined that the function of germination density of the seed exposed to elektromagnetic fields are described by a lognormal distribution, and those of the seed not exposed to the electromagnetic fields by a normal distribution. This shows that the seeds exposed to elektromagnetic fields germinate faster than those not exposed to the elektomagnetic fields, and a higher uniformity of germination is achieved. Under stimulating effect of the electromagnetic fields, seed germination increases by 7-17% and the increase is significant.
