Representation of trauma : mission (im)possible?

Trauma theory relies on an assumption (which stems from Freud’s studies) that trauma is experienced not at the time of a particular traumatic event but later through haunting memories, dreams, nightmares, and behaviour (that reveals traumatic experience). Because of this latency, it is impossible to achieve full knowledge of trauma, understand trauma and tell about it. The impossibility to understand and tell about traumatic experience is one of the most important problems in trauma discourse in various fields, including literary studies. However, many works of fiction (and non-fiction) have been written about various traumatic experiences. So how can fiction tell about trauma if it is seen as the one that is impossible to tell about and represent? Writers use various strategies of text and narrative creation in order to imitate traumatic symptoms and thus represent trauma and its effects. They rely on such strategies (some of which can be seen as modern or postmodern) as fragmentariness, particular (repetitive) imagery, repetition (of grammatical patterns or sentences), gaps in text layout and content, nonlinear narrative structure, metaphors and others that help to represent trauma. On the other hand, Jean-François Lyotard’s idea that “put[ting] forward the unpresentable in presentation […] impart[s] a stronger sense of the unrepresentable” (Lyotard 1993: 46) is also interesting. Thus, do the mentioned strategies represent trauma or strengthen the sense of unrepresentability?
