Abstract: Straipsnyje nagrinėjamas darnaus vystymosi kompetencijų ugdymas(is) per užsienio kalbos (anglų) mokymąsi universitetinėse studijose. Teorinėje dalyje pristatoma komunikacinės kompetencijos struktūra. Analizuojama komunikacinės kompetencijos sandara, jos sudedamosios dalys. Apžvelgiamos ir pristatomos analizuotų autorių idėjos ir sampratos. Empirinėje dalyje aptariamas tarptautinis kiekybinis tyrimas, kuris vykdytas Vytauto Didžiojo universitete ir Jūrų akademijoje (Bulgarija). Tyrimu siekta nustatyti, ar tikslinga į anglų kalbos studijų programą įtraukti temas, kuriose nagrinėjamos darnaus vystymosi (ekonomikos, aplinkosaugos, socialinės ir institucinės) problemos
Education of sustainable development competence (SDC) is an actual global education topic. Competences, enabling specialists to compete on a global labour and science market equally, as well as the impact of higher education institution (HEI) for the SDC enhancement has not been thoroughly analyzed, but has gained scientific attention in Lithuania (Galkutė, 2005; Čiegis, 2008; Šivickas, 2009; Varžinskas, 2011; Kareivaitė, 2012; Mikalauskienė; 2014; Štreimikienė, 2014; Šimanskienė, 2014; Juknys, 2015). The concept of holistic personality grounds that competences are essential ingredients in personʼs professional and everyday life situations. Considering that the present time is associated not only with knowledge, but also competence – based society formation, HEI orientates its strategic perspectives towards the personality who is able to adapt to unstable environment and challenges of the modern world. The analysis of communication in foreign languages (English) and cross-cultural communication is based on Lithuanian, European and the UN strategic documents and scientific literature. Accordingly, it has been observed that foreign language (English) communicative aspect and its significance for the enhancement of SDC has not been sufficiently investigated. Therefore, the article analyzes factors and environment of SDC enhancement through foreign language (English) learning. The research question: Why is it important to educate sustainable development competence (SDC) via English learning within the context of constant change and new rules at Higher Education Institution?
