The literature devoted to smoking prevention in primary schools does not reveal data concerning the efficiency of the recommended programs or several preventive activities which aim to broaden the students' knowledge of smoking hazards, develop their abilities or solidify their skills. The objective of this work is to define the suitability of thematic pictures (to deepen the knowledge of negative consequences of tobacco smoking, form the negative attitude towards smoking as well as strengthen the motivation not to smoke in future) for smoking prevention in the third and fourth grades. 213 students of the third and fourth grades from two comprehensive schools participated in the research. The research included 104 boys (48,8 %) and 109 girls (51,2 %) with the average age of 9,6±0,77 years. The students were divided into two intervention groups (82 students in the first group and 49 students in the second) as well as a comparative group of 82 students. Smoking prevention activities using thematic pictures were conducted in both intervention groups. Students had to colour thematic books with antismoking pictures and discuss various smoking hazards. The result of the research revealed that the usage of thematic pictures for smoking prevention in primary schools is effective: it deepens and widens the primary school students' knowledge of smoking harm. The activities of smoking prevention using the thematic pictures strengthen primary school students' motivation not to smoke in future. The attitude of the majority of the children and their parents towards thematic pictures as a used measure has been proved to be positive.
