Abstract: This paper presents research that investigated how persons who have earned the doctoral degree of social work at any Finnish university from 1994 to 2005 understand the phenomena of social work and the scientific way of investigation of social work phenomena. The research material included 33 qualitative questionnaires. Material was analysed using qualitative content analysis. The main results describe the specific understanding of social work identity as a professional activity and at the same time as an academic subject
