Abstract: In this article the author discusses the state of Lithuanian theatre criticism published in the Lithuanian periodicals between 1904–1914. Critical texts of this period, disregarded as too subjective and unreliable until recent times, are treated here as a specific form of writing, which, by forming the whole, becomes extremely informative on the period’s theatre consciousness. Treated in this manner these texts show that Lithuanian theatre criticism between 1904–1914 was in a state of changes from benevolent enthusiasm, characteristic to the spirit of the National Reniascence before 1904, an ability to create a critical distance in estimating process. It is significant that the post of a regular reviewer was created in any Lithuanian periodical of the time, nevertheless, the quantity of materials on theatre issues points that reflection of the state of the Lithuanian theatre was considered as particularly important. Frequent polemics and controversies caused by critical thought of a reviewer illustrates the significance of the role theatre criticism had in theatre process of first two decades of XXth century and extensiveness of a response in society. The beginning of self-reflection process in theatre criticism is another characteristic feature of the period: constant discussions on quality and a sense of criticims were juxtaposed to unregulated relationships with theatre practice caused by a lack of experience and definite aesthetic and theoretical criteria of evaluation
