Abstract: The article surveys images of the human being in Lithuanian theatre during the Soviet years, highlighting shifts in representation techniques and changes in Soviet societyës identity, and the moral and ideological imagination that they testify. The three stages suggested, metonymies of emotions, moral allegories and the metaphors of the inner space, respectively delineate changes towards the establishment of the images of the substantive human psyche at the expense of the extrusion of the specific historical reality. On the other hand, changes of representation are closely related to a gradual shift from actorës to directorës theatre
