Abstract: The article presents a review of the national education reform in Lithuania, discusses those social changes (increase of families at risk, extra-marital births, juvenile delinquents), which have had impact on education system and have caused the necessity of social support and preventive work in educational institutions. The article presents premises (social justice, equal opportunities, special education) on which school social work is founded. The mission of a school social worker (to provide a link between home, school and community) and requirements for this profession are revealed
