Abstract: The traditional Lithuanian anecdotes are compared with the texts of contemporary anecdotes in this article. The structures and semantics of the contemporary anecdotes are quite the same as those of traditional anecdotes. New social problems, new characters and details of reality occur in contemporary texts, but they are frequently just transformations of old plots and patterns. The main function of contemporary anecdotes is entertainment. Even the folk ethic norm prohibiting making fun of ill people is sometimes neglected in them
