The article deals with the history of the remaining the 22 samples of the ethnographical kanklės (stringed instruments), which were in the collections of the Lithuanian museums till the World War II. In the post - war period after the reorganization of the Vytautas Magnus culture museum in Kaunas, 10 samples of the kanklės were held in the church of Žagarė (Joniškis reg.) to 1990 and to 1992 in the warehouse of Joniškis, until when these samples were passed to „Aušra“ museum in Šiauliai. However 5 exhibits of the „Alka“ museum in Mažeikiai and 7 – of „Aušra“ museum were lost and its destiny is unknown. The construction, typology and connection with the traditions of the kanklės played in the Northern Aukštaitija and Žemaitija, from where these samples mostly were collected, is being analyzed. Missed kanklės, according to the data of the study of Z. Slavinskas in 1937, were the typical instruments of the 19th – the I part of the 20th cc. They preserved the main features of the construction of traditional instruments and were related to the other samples of the ethnographical exhibits of the museums of Lithuania. Kanklės which were found are typical and modified instruments of the period mentioned. Its construction, ornamentation, number of strings shows the features of folk producing and traditions of usage. According to the data of the expeditions of the 1988 and 1989 in the Northern and Western Lithuania there were fixed a lot of facts of the producing and using the typical and modified kanklės. All the examples of these instruments are related to the samples of the instruments found and show a very strong traditions of the playing on the kanklės in Nothern and Western Lithuania – Aukštaitija and Žemaitija.[...]en
