Abstract (en)
In "Faces of State Terrorism", Laura Westra examines the phenomenon of state terrorism in contemporary societies. Today, ‘terrorism’ is used primarily to refer to acts committed by non-state agents against the state, whereas ‘state terrorism’ generally refers to the totalitarian regimes of the twentieth century, Nazi Germany and Stalinist Soviet Union. Westra illuminates the rise of both non-state terrorism and counter terrorist activities in contemporary societies and, drawing on the especially complex nature and legacy of terrorist activities, also argues that the ‘war on terror’ constitutes another form of terrorism – that is, a counter terrorism or state terrorism.
