Abstract: The investigation revealed that fungi of genus Alternaria prevailed in the seeds of common caraway and made up 53.3 % of the total isolate amount. They were detected on the surface (frequency of occurrence (FO) 58.4 %) as well as in the internal tissues (FO 48.9 %) of seeds collected in various localities and different years. Seven Alternaria species were identified: A. alternata, A. chlamidospora, A. dauci, A. macrospora, A. petroselini, A. radicina and A. tenuissima. The most common among them were A. alternata (relative density (RD) 63.4 %), A. tenuissima (RD 22.7 %) and A. radicina (RD 11.9 %). The FO of Alternaria species depend on caraway growing place as well as the year of harvesting. The seeds of wild caraway were less contaminated by fungi of genus Alternaria. The variable and rainy weather during caraway seed ripening was favourable for distribution Alternaria spp.
