The faculty of Catholic Theology at Vytautas Magnus university was restored at the beginning of 1990. After two decades some questions come to mind concerning its historical origin and the development until these days. The object of the research: the Faculty of Catholic Theology at Vytautas Magnus University. The tasks of the research: firstly, to present the historical origin of the Faculty of Catholic Theology at Vytautas Magnus university; secondly, to reveal the development of the historical origin; thirdly, to describe the present situation of the faculty. The research is based on earlier publications and recent sources. The conclusions: 1. The predecessor of the faculty was the Faculty of Theology and Philosophy at Lithuanian university in Kaunas city founded in 1922. 2. The origin of Lithuanian university goes back to Jesuit college in Vilnius in 1579 which had grown into the university established by Stephen Bathory and confirmed by the bull Deum attente by Pope Gregory XIII (the first were faculties of theology and philosophy, only later appeared those of canon and civil law). 3. In 1940 after the Soviet occupation, following a special decree of Vatican Congregation of Catholic Education, the faculty was moved to Kaunas Interdiocesan Priests’ seminary and during all the occupation functioned as a separate faculty under the control of Vatican. 4. After the restauration of independence, the faculty was restored at the beginning of 1990. 5. Starting with the year 2005, there appeared the departments of Theology, Religious Studies, Church Law at the faculty.
