Abstract: Internationally conducted research on migrants’ monetary remittances shows that in some cases such money transfers to the migrants’ native lands have a major impact on the latter’s economic development. But because not enough attention is paid in Lithuania to an extensive analysis of, and dedicated research on, this issue, it is still unclear what significance Lithuanian migrants’ monetary remittances have on the country’s economic development. The purpose of this article is to survey the main tendencies of migrants’ monetary remittances in the world as a whole and Lithuania in particular and to discuss the economic importance of these remittances. It is hoped that the article will stimulate more probing research into the peculiarities of such money transfers to Lithuania, how the pattern of these remittances changes, how these moneys are used, and so on. In surveying the tendencies of migrants’ monetary remittances in the world and in both interwar and contemporary Lithuania, the article will also discuss the main theoretical views on the economic significance of such remittances.
