Soviet studies in Lithuania, especially those focusing on the relationship between the system and the ruling elite, are dominated by a totalitarian approach that mainly analyses different aspects of a single choice between supporting and opposing the Soviet regime. However, by focusing on Soviet everyday life, and the experiences and motivations of its participants as seen “from the inside,” there is room for looking at it as a cultural system with its own logic and internal meanings. In this article such a possibility is related to the perspective of a “modernized Lithuania” that promises to be one of the most important trends in Soviet Lithuanian historiography. It is noteworthy that research in this field has not yet progressed very far. By unpacking the metaphor of “Soviet-Period achievements,” the article reveals the ambiguity characterizing the activities of the Soviet Lithuanian nomenklatura as different modernization projects were implemented ranging from outright Sovietisation to the mobilization of national identity.
