Abstract: For émigré intellectuals, their forced emigration during World War II became a dramatic necessity to determine new criteria for evaluating phenomena of Lithuanian culture. In examining how art, as a way of representing one‘s nation in the world, evolved in the émigré community, some characteristic elements of national identity become apparent, which elements, it turns out, influenced cultural creativity as a whole. The loss of homeland and a totally alien new environment strengthened the appreciation of national tradition, therefore visual artists had to expend much energy in softening the categorically critical attitudes of the Lithuanian exile community-at-large toward the avant-garde currents of art that powerfully asserted themselves in the second half of the 20th century. It had to be, and was, explained that artistically integrating the new does not mean renouncing one‘s roots and that experimenting in art is a way not of disgracing but of honoring and exalting one‘s nation, as the example of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis well shows. An attitude, little changed in four decades, of most Lithuanians toward the idea of creative freedom shows the radically conservative mindset of the diaspora toward national values, the defense and preservation of which reveal more distinctive features of the national character.
